The island crest proclaims 'All this beauty is of God'. Last year, one-and-a-half million people came to relax among the island's hills, forests, downs and resorts. The pace of life is slower and communities are still centred on the village churches. In tonight's special open-air programme, over 1,000 Christians from the island's 184 churches have gathered in Carisbrooke Castle near Newport to sing their Songs of Praise. Cliff Michelmore meets some of his fellow islanders, including Chief Petty Officer George Bromley, who was aboard HMS Hermes during the Falklands conflict, and 19-year-old Louise Rowe, who is a member of the Movement for the Ordination of Women.

The ancient Lough Derg pilgrimage requires three days in your bare feet on rocky beds of sharp stone; a fast from food and drink for three full days; two days and a night spent without sleep and given to continuous mantra-like prayer. There is no Place quite like it to be found across the Christian world.
In this unique film of the pilgrimage to St Patrick's Purgatory on a remote island in Co Donegal, Tom Hamill traces the pilgrims' path to one of Europe's most ancient holy places whose fascination is echoed in both Dante and Shakespeare and attracts some
30,000 pilgrims each summer.
