Ten European countries are represented In this competition to decide Europe's top athletics nation. The separate men's and women's matches include many top stars from the World Championships in Helsinki last week. Each country has one athlete per event and the competition, decided on a points basis, traditionally produces some very exciting athletics.
The men's finalists are East Germany, USSR, West Germany, Poland, Italy, Hungary, France, Great Britain and Northern Ireland.
The women's match is between East Germany, USSR, West Germany, Bulgaria, Poland, Czechoslovakia, Hungary, Great Britain and Northern Ireland.
