Britain's first gold medal of the championships could come in the triple jump where Keith Connor, the European and Commonwealth Champion, starts favourite for this afternoon's final.
Also today the American sprinters who missed the 1980 Olympic Games are out to re-establish their supremacy in a major championship.
In the men's 100m final, won in Moscow by Allan Wells, the talented American champion Carl Lewis runs against Calvin Smith, who last month broke the 15-year-old world record for the distance.
In the women's 100m, the new world record holder is Evelyn Ashford of the USA, who meets her old rival Marlies Gohn of the German Democratic Republic. Today's Finals:
4.0 Men's triple jump (Current World Record 17.89m Joao De Oliveira, Brazil, 1975)
5.50 Women's 100m (10.79 sec Evelyn Ashford, USA, 1983)

The Opren Scandal
.... a devastatingly powerful indictment ... (LONDON STANDARD) When the drug Opren was launched in Britain it was described to the public as a breakthrough in the treatment of arthritis. But a year ago it was withdrawn when it became clear that death could be one of its side-effects. Tom Mangold 's investigation shows how Opren's manufacturers made claims that weren't justified by their research; how evidence of the drug's adverse side-effects was withheld; and how further crucial evidence was not acted upon until it was too late.

starring Jason Robards Stella Stevens
When Cable Hogue has his horse and water canteen stolen by his two partners, he discovers - by chance - a waterhole. The tough prospector decides to stake a claim on the land and sell water to passing stagecoach travellers. But as well as becoming rich, he also wants to revenge himself on Taggart and Bowen who left him to die ... This slightly uncharacteristic Sam Peckinpah Western blends comedy with action in one of his most engaging films.
