What was life like for ordinary people in the Middle Ages? Few books have answered that question more vividly than Montaillou by French historian EMMANUEL LE ROY LADURIE , a chronicle of life in a 14th-century village in the Pyrenees.
This is a portrait of Montaillou as it was in 1300 and as it is today. Readings MARTIN JARVIS and DENISE BRYER

An Inside Story documentary
On 7 September 1940 Hurricanes of 257 Squadron took off from Martlesham Heath , Suffolk, to intercept a large wave of enemy bombers over the Thames estuary, heading towards London on what turned out to be the first day of the London Blitz.
Among those lost in the battle was Fl-Lt H. R. A. Beresford. No one saw him shot down. He was posted as ' missing ' until September 1979 when Second World War military aircraft enthusiasts located beneath the mud of the Isle of Sheppey what they believed to be the wreckage of a fighter ...

A Lady in Drag
Drag racing is a sport for people with a single ambition-to build a machine that will propel them down a quarter of a mile of disused air-strip, faster than anyone else. Speeds of 200 mph across the finish line are commonplace, acceleration of 0-100 mph in 1½ seconds is a necessity. Precision construction and the most advanced design technology has to come together to get the most out of drag racing's fastest performer -the Top Fuel car, an explosive handful even for the most experienced drivers.
With the help of one of Top Fuel's top drivers, a psychologist and a fighter pilot, Maggie Philbin learns how to race it.

A six-part exploration of university life today.
4: The Union Girl
At 22, Imogen Foulkes from South Wales is the boss of a business with 200 employees and an income in excess of L3 million a year. She is senior president of Edinburgh University Students Association and spokeswoman for 10,000 students.
For Imogen and her executive colleagues in power-Tony Miles, Alan Little and Laurence O'Don nell - election to the coveted posts brings a sabbatical year away from academic study and a salary of over £4,000. They are also expected to represent and campaign on behalf of their members and customers, the students.
With university grants falling in value, many undergraduates are having to skimp to survive. Imogen leads her supporters on to the streets to carry the message home to the public. They face opposition both on and off the campus.
