In December 1787 HMS Bounty sails for Tahiti on a mission to transport from there the recently discovered breadfruit plants now regarded as an important source of food. Captain Bligh, newly promoted, hopes that the voyage will launch him on a brilliant career, so he is not at all pleased to hear it called 'a grocer's errand' by his first officer. As the days pass, the Captain's zeal becomes increasingly unpopular throughout the ship.
