On her first visit to the dentist, a 7-year-old girl has her fillings without an injection. She smiles and feels no pain. A 10-year-old asthmatic boy who could not play games describes his new life made possible by hypnosis - "I never thought it would work, but it did. I just feel like a new boy." A Glasgow nurse undergoes major surgery using no general anaesthetic - only hypnosis. She remains conscious throughout - "It feels like an elastic band being pulled." A wartime RAF pilot describes how a 30-year pus-ridden rash, which appeared after a near-miss incident, cleared up after he began using self-hypnosis. A factory worker who lost his voice two years ago, following a domestic tragedy, speaks again - but only in trance. This is the first stage of treatment in which a consultant believes his voice will eventually return.
Patients and doctors describe how they use hypnosis to treat various forms of illness. This film depicts hypnosis not as a panacea nor cure-all but an increasingly important adjunct in the doctor's armoury.
