3: When the Rocking Chair Gets You ...
Does fetirement mean being discarded by society? Or can it mean the start of a new life?
Northumberland pit electrician Alf Goodall , Bournemouth bank manager John Chinneck , and Concorde pilot Leo Budd all face retirement, but from different angles with a different outlook.
Reporter Bernard Falk follows ALF GOODALL down the pit on his last day to share the camaraderie which he will miss most; across to New York with LEO BUDD flying the machine which is his obsession; and toasts JOHN CHINNECK when the great day finally arrives. He talks to Lord Soper, who is stilt going strong at nearly 80; and Kathleen Gibberd , 84, who thinks the old should be respected by society for their wisdom.
