Until after the Battle of Waterloo, the Duke of Wellington had never owned a settled home of his own, and when the grateful country gave him E600,000 to buy a country house, he chose Stratfield Saye, 30 miles from London. He put in central heating and water closets; and Copenhagen, the horse he had ridden at Waterloo, was installed in the stables.
