The first of a new six-part series of zoological exploration. Neither Land nor Sea
Introduced by Jeffery Boswall
The twice-daily surge of the tide across the open mudflats and through the hot, humid mangroves offers a challenging world for the animals and plants that live there. At high tide it's a haven for otters and kingfishers seeking out their food, and when the mud is exposed it's the turn of colourful fiddler crabs jostling between their burrows; mudskippers - fish that live out of water to sift the sediments, and long-tailed macaques which prize barnacles from the exposed mangrove roots.
