John Updike, the American writer, talks to Melvyn Bragg about life in a small American town, and how it has influenced his work.
John Updike's novels are rooted in two small towns: Shillington, Pennsylvania, which was his childhood home and the basis of his first four novels; and Ipswich, Mass, which provided the background for his last book, the best-selling "Couples", and where he now lives.
