A documentary biography written and narrated by James Cameron.
' It is impossible not to be thrilled by Edgar Wallace ' was the cry in the 1920s, as a stream of best-sellers flowed from the dictaphone of one of the greatest popular entertainers of all time.
But the story of Edgar Wallace 's life is as remarkable as any of his fictions. He was born on 1 April
1875, the illegitimate son of a small-time actress. In 56 years he became, among other things, newspaper seller, medical orderly, poet, war correspondent, editor, tipster, novelist, dramatist, film-maker, racehorse owner, impresario, politician. He made fortunes, and spent them again on his two enduring loves-the Stage and the Turf. He died in Hollywood in 1932, while writing King Kong. He was a man larger than life. This programme includes clips from films of Edgar Wallace 's stories-The Four Just Men, Sanders of the River, The Squeaker (with Alastair Sim ), The Terror (with Wilfrid Lawson ) and The Clue of the New Pin (with John Gielgud ).
Among contributors with memories of Edgar Wallace are Lord Cudlipp Dorothy Dickson , Cathleen Nesbitt Sir Carol Reed
