Twenty-five years ago, in Paris in the summer of 1945, Marshal Philippe Petain, then aged 89, was called to answer a charge of high treason. Petain, the heroic defender of Verdun in 1917, had become, after the French collapse in 1940, head of the so-called Vichy regime. When General de Gaulle returned to France, as leader of the Free French movement, Petain was accused in the High Court of Justice of crimes against his country and the men of the Resistance.
Tonight's programme is taken verbatim from the official transcript of the proceedings.
