Second in a new three-part series examining why people kill.

Tonight's film reveals shocking new evidence about the role that child abuse can play in turning a child into a killer. It also features exclusive interviews with murderers on death row, some of whom, as children, were themselves victims of sickening brutality. Their testimonials are contrasted with current scientific thinking.

[Photo caption] Were Donta Paige's childhood experiences a contributing factor in his rape and stabbing of fellow student Peyton Tuthill?

Mind of a Murderer 9.00pm BBC2
There are many truly awful stories here of murder, grief and loss. But the most affecting is that of the angry and unhappy little boy who hurls toys and furniture when gently asked by a psychiatrist about what happened to his mother.
Young Justin is desperately upset by this question because, unthinkably, he watched as his mum was stabbed to death by his father. Thankfully, tremendous psychiatric care and support from his grandparents has helped to ease Justin's memories and modified his behaviour.
But the central question of this disturbing and frequently harrowing documentary asks whether witnessing or experiencing such horrors at an early age can, if untreated, lead to desperate actions in later life (such as the case of self-confessed killer Donta Paige). It might sound like the ultimate bleeding-heart defence, but there is evidence to suggest that a traumatic background and upbringing can play a huge part in forming adult behaviour, to the point that the mind is actively damaged.
There is testimony from experts - from both sides of the debate - but the really affecting comments come from the families of murder victims. Obviously, it matters little to them whether their loved ones' killers had difficult backgrounds.
