Opera North's acclaimed production of Benjamin Britten's opera Gloriana, intercut with material filmed with a single camera onstage at Leeds Playhouse, behind-the-scenes footage and sequences shot on a studio stage.

The story centres on the relationship between Queen Elizabeth I and the Earl of Essex. Britten composed the opera, from biographer Lytton Strachey's Elizabeth and Essex: a Tragic History, for Queen Elizabeth II's coronation. Performed by the Chorus of Opera North and the English Northern Philharmonia, and conducted by Paul Daniel.

David Attenborough turns detective and goes on a personal quest to discover the history of a simple, carved figure he bought during the eighties at an auction. Curiosity about the statue's provenance played on Attenborough's mind and he eventually set about tracing its story, ending up on Easter Island in the Pacific Ocean.
