In 1979, Iran, an ally of America under the Shah Mohammad Reza Pahlavi, was swept by a fundamentalist revolution, whose figurehead was the Ayatollah Khomeini. America was taken by surprise, and offered the Shah asylum.
The fundamentalists reacted by seizing the US Embassy in Iran and taking American diplomats hostage.
The United States became a target for Muslim extremists, and the USSR, also fearful of this new force, attempted in 1982 to establish a Marxist regime in Afghanistan, leading it into a hopeless Vietnam-style conflict that hastened the end of the Cold War. But America and Russia's conflict with Islam was set to continue. Narrated by Kenneth Branagh.
This episode contains scenes of war that people might find distressing.

Mark O'Meara took full advantage 12 months ago to record a famous victory by one shot. At the start of play on Thursday, hopes that a British golfer could be in contention this year and follow in the footsteps of Nick Faldo , who has won three Green Jackets, were high.
