Oil and Terror
The discovery by petrol company BP of abundant oil supplies in Casanare, central Colombia, has transformed a tranquil backwater into a battleground. Guerrillas and paramilitaries are now engaged in a struggle to gain control of the region, and protection is in the hands of the Colombian army, one of the most notorious violators of human rights in the world. To compound matters, BP has been accused of stoking up the so-called dirty war.
Tonight's documentary examines the results of an investigation into these allegations, and talks to those involved in a conflict that has prompted international human rights groups to suspend military aid to Colombia.

Like the cloying humidity of the climate, the corrupting silver is seeping into the very souls of the characters. One year on, the mine is a success, greatly enriching everybody except Emilia (Serena Scott Thomas) who believes, correctly, that Charles (Colin Firth) cares more for it than for her. The prosperous mine has also enriched the country but greed inflames a military coup. Charles brings rifles from France to protect the mine, including Antonia's love Martin Decoud (Lothaire Bluteau).
Charles thinks the only safe route is to ship the booty out to sea and only one man can be trusted with the cargo - Nostromo (the dashing but slightly wooden Claudio Amendola).

Silent drama, starring Ivan Mosjoukine
Premiered in 1931 in a censored version, Casanova - the story of the famous philanderer - has since been restored with some of the more risque scenes put back. The hand-tinted colour sequences of the carnival of Venice have been meticulously restored and there is a new score commissioned from Georges Delerue.
