The Grand Canyon is a wonderland for the naturalist, with its waterfalls, hanging gardens and amazing wildlife.
Seventy million years ago it was a home to dinosaurs, but today it provides a dramatic but sometimes harsh habitat for bighorn sheep, tarantula hawks and lizards, some of which have been affected by the building of two huge dams. Narrated by Tim Pigott-Smith . See today's choices.

Boulez Conducts Stravinsky
In a concert broadcast live from the Royal Festival Hall in London, Pierre Boulez conducts the BBC Symphony Orchestra and the BBC Symphony
Chorus in a programme of music by Igor Fyodorovich Stravinsky. The concert is introduced by Michael Berkeley and opens Sounding the Century, Radio 3's retrospective of 20th-century music.
The programme features The
Nightingale, an exotic opera based on a tale by Hans Christian Andersen which deals with the triumph of a live bird over its mechanical equivalent, and the brief but elusive piece The Kingofthe Stars. Both of these are sung in Russian with English subtitles. The programme concludes with a performance of the ballet score The Rite of Spring.
