The lead singer of the rock group Queen died from an Aids-related illness in November 1991. John Deacon, Brian May and Roger Taylor, the remaining members of the band, announced this tribute to one of pop's most flamboyantly popular performers at the Brit Awards ceremony earlier this year, when they collected a posthumous award on his behalf. Among tonight's acts are opera singer Montserrat Caballe whose duet with Mercury, Barcelona, was a no 8 hit in 1987, David Bowie, Roger Daltrey, Def Leppard, Extreme, Guns 'n' Roses, Ian Hunter, Elton John, Annie Lennox, Metallica, George Michael, Robert Plant, Seal, U2, Paul Young and Zucchero. Presented by Tony Wilson and Lisa I'Anson.
With just two months to get the concert off the ground, the organisers were overwhelmed by the response from performers, technical crews and the public - all 72,000 tickets were sold within six hours of the box office opening. Profits from tonight's performance are being donated to Aids charities worldwide.
Roger Taylor says: "We see this concert as a celebration of Freddie's life, and the fulfilment of his wish to get across the message that Aids affects us all."
