For over 20 years, American actor Sam Wanamaker has nurtured a dream of rebuilding Shakespeare's Globe Theatre near its original site in Southwark, south east London. As building work begins, that dream is now coming true. It was in Southwark and not Stratford-upon-Avon that
Shakespeare lived and wrote many of his greatest plays. Alison and David Pople have a garden with a very free draining soil, a sunny aspect and watering restrictions.
David tries new varieties and ideas because he writes on gardening. 'Ours is a thing of shreds and patches' he says. Alison regards it as a chore, 'survival of the fittest' is her philosophy. A good place to take stock after all that sunshine.

The House with the Green Shutters
Communicado, winner this year of the Prudential Award for Theatre, present their revolutionary adaptation of the classic novel by George Douglas Brown , currently a sell-out on the Edinburgh Festival Fringe. A cross between Dr Finlay and Dallas, it distils Brown's vivid account of rivalries and obsessions in a 19th-century Scottish town into a fast-moving stage play. The story charts the tragic rise and fall of the small-town tyrant, John Gourlay , whose arrogance and petty-minded greed unleash a tidal wave of resentment. In its six years the company has four times won Scotsman Fringe Firsts.
