For over 20 years, American actor Sam Wanamaker has nurtured a dream of rebuilding Shakespeare's Globe Theatre near its original site in Southwark, south east London. As building work begins, that dream is now coming true. It was in Southwark and not Stratford-upon-Avon that
Shakespeare lived and wrote many of his greatest plays. Sir Micheal Hordem leads a distinguished cast of actors, architects and academics who look forward to the fulfilment of Wanamaker's dream and the opening of the theatre on Shakespeare's birthday in 1992.
