Set in a fishing community in the Aran Islands off the west coast of Ireland, against the backdrop of the perpetual danger of the sea. Vaughan Williams based the opera almost word-for-word on Synge's play and in the character of Maurya found the perfect expression for his gifts of lyrical melancholy.
