Last in a series of 13 films, in which a walled garden is restored and worked as it was 100 years ago.
Presented by Peter Thoday with Head Gardener
Harry Dodson. December
Christmas occupies much of the Head Gardener's time. Harry ensures he has a plentiful supply of produce for the festive meals by stockpiling well in advance. In the forcing house, chicory and rhubarb are ready and in the glasshouse there are prized pineapples. Harry gathers, too, quantities of holly and ivy to make elaborate garlands and wreaths for the big house.
But it is also the final month of the project, and Peter and Harry look back over the achievements of the year and reflect on what the garden has meant to them.

The Far East has a pickling tradition just as powerful as our own, though the pickling process is often unfamiliar and the baby crabs and grasshoppers encountered in this programme are not everyone's idea of a perfect pickle! But there is much to learn from the kitchens of Singapore, Thailand and Japan. Henry Tan, Philip Harris and Lesley Downer introduce you to a whole new world of pickles, and food-writer Colin Spencer , 'a passionate pickler', shows how to combine the flavours of the East with the produce of a traditional English garden.

SIR FITZROY MACLEAN
Fifty years ago,
Nikolai Bukharin , Lenin's right-hand man and favourite of the Bolsheviks, was shot by Stalin's henchmen after the last of the infamous show trials in Moscow. Mikhail Gorbachev proclaimed his death a travesty of justice and his trial a farce. Recently, in a move that has vast implications for the Soviet Union, he announced that the Russian people cannot accomplish reform until they understand their past. Granted special permission to cover the story and the first interview with Bukharin's widow Anna, Timewatch accompanies
Sir Fitzroy Maclean back to the city where he attended Bukharin's trial in 1938 to find Russians eager to talk for the first time about the terror of the 30s.
