David and Christina Phelps , newly married, return to New York from abroad to meet
David's mother, his brother Robert and Robert's fiancee Hester. Christina is a career woman with a mind of her own, whose marriage is threatend by her husband's devotion to his mother. Mrs Phelps is pathologically obsessed about losing her two sons to women they love, and a night of dramatic confrontation ensues as she fights to maintain her hold on them.
Superb performances by all five protagonists highlight this tense melodrama.

Today the great French composer Olivier Messiaen is 80 years old.
BBC2 celebrates the occasion with a live relay from the Royal Festival Hall in the presence of the composer.
George Benjamin, the young English composer who was a pupil of this outstanding teacher, presents a portrait of Messiaen with the help of Paul Crossley, Alexander Goehr and Pierre Boulez, with music from the BBC Symphony Orchestra, London Symphony Orchestra and from Messiaen himself.
BBC2 joins BBC Radio 3 and goes live to the Royal Festival Hall on London's South Bank for Act 3 of Messiaen's opera St Francis of Assisi. This final act tells the story of the saint's martyrdom. Introduced by Piers Burton-Page.
