Fourth of six films of early exploration introduced by Duncan Carse
Wings over Africa (1925)
For his trailblazing flight to Cape Town, the pioneer aviator Sir Alan Cobham took off from Croydon aerodrome in a primitive single-engined De Havilland biplane on a grey November morning in 1925. Ahead stretched a journey of some 8,000 miles - all dependent on that single engine - a flight which was to include the first aerial photography of the pyramids, landing among tribes who had never seen an aeroplane before and nearly crashing into the Victoria Falls when spray swamped the engine. At the end of it all, a triumphal welcome in Cape Town and a unique picture of Africa.

Margaret Simey has spent a lifetime in public service and served as a councillor for the Granby Ward, the heart of Liverpool's inner city, Toxteth, for over 20 years. Following the 1981 riots she attained national notoriety as chair of the local police committee. Exasperated now by what she calls our 'them and us' style of government, she takes this opportunity to reflect on our democracy.

Music exams are ordeals behind closed doors.
Tonight's film gives an insight, for the first time, into this highly-strung world. Four candidates, all from Liverpool, have been rehearsing and preparing for months. Now they must perform before the visiting Associated Board examiner. Mark [text removed] is 7. His dream is to play for Everton. There's £10 from his Dad if he passes Grade 1 piano....
James [text removed] hopes to become a professional musician. He's set his heart on a Grade 8 distinction for trombone.
Robin [text removed] has been taking mock A-levels too. Will her violin playing suffer?
Peter Gayer is 33, and failed his first saxophone test. What chance has he in Grade 4? Under the pressure some excel, others falter. The final results are surprising. But it has been an experience they won't forget....
