Wings over Africa (1925)
For his trailblazing flight to Cape Town, the pioneer aviator Sir Alan Cobham took off from Croydon aerodrome in a primitive single-engined De Havilland biplane on a grey November morning in 1925. Ahead stretched a journey of some 8,000 miles - all dependent on that single engine - a flight which was to include the first aerial photography of the pyramids, landing among tribes who had never seen an aeroplane before and nearly crashing into the Victoria Falls when spray swamped the engine. At the end of it all, a triumphal welcome in Cape Town and a unique picture of Africa.
