British industrialists are wringing their hands about European predators and demanding more protection against foreign takeovers. They say UK companies present easy takeover targets but it is much harder for UK companies to make acquisitions in Europe. Are they right? Henry Harington reports from Brussels, Paris, Munich and Rome on a rash of company takeovers within the EEC as Europe prepares for the single market in 1992. Some of Europe's current merger maestros show how takeovers of EEC companies can succeed.

The reefs of the 7,000 islands of the Philippines are as rich in life as the tropical forests that once cloaked the land.
Filipinos traditionally looked to both reef and forest for a livelihood, but now the demands of 58 million people threaten the very plants and animals on which all depend. Notorious Muru Ami ships exploit crews of children to sweep the reefs bare; fishermen use dynamite to kill fish for the market, or poison to stun them for the international aquarium trade; and on land yet more trees are felled and soil washed to the sea. Can people, reefs and forests survive and live together? Photography

In these four special commissions, some of Britain's finest young composers were invited to create pieces combining the vivid imagery of film and video with an adventurous approach to musical sound. 1: Missa del Cid by Judith Weir
How does a composer of today add to the great tradition of musical settings of the Latin Mass? Judith Weir 's ambition to write a Mass was finally realised when she read the 13th century Spanish epic poem, El Cid , chronicling the combat between Moors and Christians. The result is a striking fusion of litany and violent epic filmed in an appropriately ritualistic style and environment.
