How does a composer of today add to the great tradition of musical settings of the Latin Mass? Judith Weir 's ambition to write a Mass was finally realised when she read the 13th century Spanish epic poem, El Cid , chronicling the combat between Moors and Christians. The result is a striking fusion of litany and violent epic filmed in an appropriately ritualistic style and environment.
