Riders to the Sea

on BBC Two England

An opera by Ralph Vaughan Williams. Text by J. M. Synge.
Last of three British operas.
Set in a fishing community in the Aran Islands off the west coast of Ireland, against the backdrop of the perpetual danger of the sea. Vaughan Williams based the opera almost word-for-word on Synge's play and in the character of Maurya found the perfect expression for his gifts of lyrical melancholy.
Radio Telefis Eireann Chamber Choir; Radio Telefis Eireann Concert Orchestra conducted by Bryden Thompson.
Produced and directed by LOUIS LENTIN . A RTE/NVC production
