Ten films about contemporary architecture 9: Berlin: A City for People
It took eight years to create Berlin's mammoth
International Building
Exhibition of 1987, with a cast list of contributors that reads like a Who's Who of contemporary architecture. Its focus was on social housing within the modern inner city. The venue for the exhibition was the city itself, real houses and building complexes, already inhabited, and designed to demonstrate how the city can once again become a place fit for people. The Berlin schemes could well become prototypes for the rest of the world, building with people rather than merely for them. Narrator Andrew Sachs

'A sunny place for shady people' - Tuscany has always been a magnet for the British escaping from their native climate and morals. John Mortimer is the latest in a long line of British writers from Shelley to D.H. Lawrence , to fall under the Tuscan spell. He talks to two distinguished exiles, Sir Harold Acton and Muriel Spark and to some of the lesser-known Britons who flock to Florence every year in search of enlightenment.
Does Italy still have the same effect on English girls as it had on Lucy Honeychurch in E. M. Forster 's A Room with a View?

Tested to Destruction
Military training needs to be tough and realistic. But do the 'professionals' know where to draw the line between mock combat and the dangers of the real thing? Every year dozens of servicemen are killed and injured by accidents in basic training. The Ministry of Defence is economical with the details, so the truth escapes only on rare occasions, either because there are civilian witnesses or because relatives have battled for answers.
Hugh Prysor-Jones investigates cases which reveal incompetence on the ground and evasion stretching up to the Ministry of Defence in Whitehall. Research SIAN PENLINGTON Producer BRIAN BARR Editor COLIN CAMERON BBC North West

A portrait of an island continent insixepisodes narrated by Robyn Williams 5:Land of Flood and Fire. Kakadu, in the Northern Territory, and the happy hunting ground of Crocodile Dundee, is Australia at its wettest. Just a short distance from Papua New Guinea, the top end receives the tropical monsoons. The deluge supports lush swamps with myriads of birds, flying foxes and some of the largest crocodiles in the world. There are caves where grotesque bat-eating frogs and snakes lurk, and termites provide nesting places for kingfishers that do not fish. During the dry season, spectacular congregations of ducks and geese occur as the pools dwindle. Australia's own unique wildlife mingles with immigrants from South East Asia.
But over 50,000 years ago, new visitors - members of the human race - set foot on Australia's northern shores and, through fire, made a lasting impact on the land. Producer DIONE GILMOUR Film editors
