A Prayer for the Dying
Michael Cockerell reviews the new film starring
Mickey Rourke , Bob Hoskins and Alan Bates , set amid the troubles in Northern Ireland, and asks how successfully cinema and television have met the challenge of representing Ulster on the screen.
Monuments for Our Time Andrew Graham Dixon reviews the first retrospective exhibition of the work of sculptor
Michael Sandle which opens today at the Whitechapel Gallery, London. Sandle's
St George and the Dragon and The Drummer are triumphant treatments of traditional themes, whereas A 20th-century Monument and A
Mighty Blow for Freedom are brutal attacks on current preoccupations: the Vietnam War and the obsession with television. Sandle is interviewed in his studio in Karlsruhe, West Germany, where he is Professor of Sculpture. Directors

We all depend on services few of us would want to provide. The jobs are often unpleasant, sometimes shameful - not the kind of jobs you'd want to talk about. This series looks at these 'secret services' - and the people who provide them, in the face of ignorance, suspicion or distaste.
This film features a team of Manchester City Council sewermen in combat against the crumbling walls of the city's 1,500-mile network - one of the oldest in the country. Our cities would be cesspits of contagious disease without sewage systems. Yet the men who keep the sewers flowing know that the public would prefer to forget them and their work.
