I'm Just a Simple Man
As part of the celebrations marking the birth of the painter L. S. Lowry , BBC2 is showing again this film about the Lancashire artist. First seen the year after
Lowry's death in 1976, the film was made by the distinguished documentary director John Read and it contains what is now rare archive of Lowry at work.
As an introduction to his film John Read returned to the City of Manchester Art
Gallery to reassess the work of a man whom he regards as one of the greatest British painters of this century.
Read comments, "I'm just a simple man", he said.
I'm not sure I believed him - even then.'

Third of five programmes in BBC2's festival. With the BBC Welsh Symphony Orchestra conducted by Mariss Yanssons
The Fifth Symphony is one of the composer's most popular and powerful works. Written in the shadow of bitter attacks from Pravda after the Bolshoi premiere of his Lady Macbeth of Mtsensk, the symphony was originally titled 'A Soviet Artist's Reply to Just Criticism'.
Mariss Yanssons has had a long association with the BBC Welsh Symphony
Orchestra and with the 20th-century Russian repertoire and his performances of Shostakovich are among the most highly praised.

Film critic John Francis Lane recalls the furore caused at the 1954 Venice Film Festival by Luchino Visconti's "Senso" starring Alida Valli, Farley Granger
The 1860s. As the Italian independence movement grows in strength, Venice is still occupied by Austrian troops. At a performance of Verdi's "Il trovatore", a young Italian rebel gets into a fight with an Austrian officer. Fearing for her cousin's life Countess Serpieri tries to intercede but loses her heart to the handsome lieutenant. Visconti's gloriously photographed melodrama about sexual and political conflict recalls the extravagance of an Italian opera.
