celebrates the centenary of Edith Sitwell 's birth with a new production of Facade devised and presented by Pamela Hunter with the NASH ENSEMBLE conducted by JIM PARKER
When it was first performed in 1923, this 'entertainment with poems' by Edith Sitwell and William Walton caused a small riot. Miss Sitwell hid behind a curtain until the audience had cleared the hall. Later she wrote:
'The misunderstandings that arose round these poems!
Their apparent gaiety caused them to be suspect. But we were just being ourselves ..." In her prologue to the piece, Pamela Hunter uses Edith Sitwell 's own words to conjure up the world of childhood memories and associations which were her inspiration.
And television adds a further dimension: archive film and electronic wizardry combining to create 'Facade - the Video'.
