Those words from the poem A Career, are quoted in Shostakovich's 13th
Symphony. They are the bitter, coded protest of an artist who spent much of his creative life in conflict with the state. Tomorrow night,
BBC2 broadcasts the British stage premiere of the opera which sparked off this conflict, Lady Macbeth of Mtsensk. Tonight, in a new documentary, the public achievement and private struggles of the composer are retold by his friends, family and colleagues, many of them speaking on film for the first time. His third wife Irina, his son Maxim and his daughter Galina describe the experiences of the Shostakovich family, while among those bearing witness to his artistic life are the poet Yevgeny Yevtushenko, veteran film director Leonid Trauberg , the singers Galina Vishnevskaya and Yevgeny Nesterenko , conductors
Gennadi Rozhdestvensky and Rudolf Barshai and theatre director Yuri Lyubimov. The circumstances of Shostakovich's life are illuminated by his vocal music, performed by the bass Dimiter Petkov , soprano Kathryn Harries with the pianist Graham Johnson. Narrated by Michael Berkeley

The Final from Calcutta, India
After four-and-a-half weeks and 27 matches across India and Pakistan the two finalists are in Calcutta,
India's largest city, for the final of the one-day, 50-oversper-side, fourth World Cup. The venue is Eden Gardens with a capacity crowd of well over 100,000. Previous winners are the West Indies (1975 and 1979) and the current holders India (1983). Cricket is the most popular sport for India's 800 million population.
