Third of five programmes in BBC2's festival. With the BBC Welsh Symphony Orchestra conducted by Mariss Yanssons
The Fifth Symphony is one of the composer's most popular and powerful works. Written in the shadow of bitter attacks from Pravda after the Bolshoi premiere of his Lady Macbeth of Mtsensk, the symphony was originally titled 'A Soviet Artist's Reply to Just Criticism'.
Mariss Yanssons has had a long association with the BBC Welsh Symphony
Orchestra and with the 20th-century Russian repertoire and his performances of Shostakovich are among the most highly praised.
