The Year of the Green Centre Australia's wettest year on record brought floods and disasters to many areas.
Central Australia is the driest part of this driest of permanently inhabited continents, and yet even this 'red centre' was deluged with the most widespread and persistent rains for a century. It turned green almost overnight.
A normally drought-ridden land was awakened into the most vividly spectacular bloom of desert flowers and animals in living memory. The rains triggered birds into breeding and produced abundant food for insects, lizards, mice and men. Producers

A personal view of this year's Edinburgh Festival by actor Bill Paterson.
It's a long time since Bill Paterson 's Fringe debut at Morningside Masonic Halls in a 1966 student performance that managed to total an audience of 30 over its entire three-week run.
Twenty-one years on, with plenty of full houses and triumphs to his credit (many of them at the Fringe), he's back at the festival as a spectator. He'll be working his way round the festival highlights such as the Berliner Ensemble's performances of Brecht songs and poems and The Caucasian Chalk Circle, and taking a special interest in Fringe companies across the whole range - from professional theatre to undergraduate productions. Perhaps TOM STOPPARD'S Dirty Linen will bring back memories of the insalubrious squat they both happened to be sharing back in the early days ... and he'll be finding out how things have changed since the 60s by talking to some of the performers and participants in Edinburgh.
