F starring
John Wayne
Montgomery Clift One of the great
Westerns, Red River tells the story of Thomas Dunson, a snung-willed and hot-tempered pioneer, and his decision to embark on an unprecedented cattle drive from Texas to Abilene,
Kansas. Dunson's single-minded and ruthless obsession brings him into conflict with his adopted son, Matthew Garth, sole survivor of an Indian massacre many years before.
John Wayne stars in one of his toughest roles as the determined Dunson, and Montgomery Clift plays the rebellious foster son in a tale of drama and action across the great plains of America.

In this award-winning film, getting its British television premiere tonight, watch one of the greatest painters of the 20th century at work.
Pablo Picasso was persuaded by Henri-Georges Clouzot to come into a film studio and paint. As with the recent series Painting with Light, the images grow and change before the camera.
The film was made in 1956, before the age of the computer, colour television and the Quantel Paintbox.
Henri-Georges Clouzot could only set up his camera in front of a screen on which Picasso worked. But the end results shimmer and glow with colour as this great and inventive master entertains the viewer. Music by GEORGES AURIC Directed by HENRI-GEORGES CLOUZOT

Professor Shen Xiang has been teaching Western music in China since 1947, bringing considerable international recognition to the work of the Central Conservatory of Music in Peking - a city of striking contrasts. His students achieved extraordinary success in the 1985 Cardiff Singer of the World competition and the Mirjam Helin competition in Finland. As well as overcoming the consequences of the Cultural Revolution, the Chinese have conquered what is a totally different musical language, and leamt new methods of voice production.

This is the story of a journey and a portrait of three people - Joy Ungricht, Mark Jensen and Stan Boor - who make that journey. In this spectacular, award-winning documentary, these three young Americans attempt to raft one of the world's most dangerous rivers, the Bio-Bio, and explain why they have chosen a life style so perilously close to the edge. continues a season starring the movie heroes.
Tonight with John Randolph
Based on the true story of Frank Serpico , this movie depicts the violent world encountered by the undercover cop. Joining the New York City police as an idealistic young rookie, he refuses the pay-offs which are commonplace to his colleagues. Transferred to plain-clothes work, his idealism and unconventional behaviour further isolate him from the force and his life is in danger from both sides of the law.
