The Story of Jazz in France
France has been called the second country of jazz next to America. The Hot Club de France was the first jazz organisation to be formed anywhere, and the Orchestre National de Jazz is the only state-funded jazz orchestra in the world. Many visiting American musicians have chosen to make their home in France and Sidney Bechet was adopted as a national hero, as popular as Maurice Chevalier and Edith Piaf.
In this survey of jazz activity in France past and present is rare archive film of Django Reinhardt and the Quintette du Hot Club France, Sidney Bechet, Bud Powell, Kenny Clarke, Bill Coleman and Don Byas as well as recent performances by Claude Luter, Babik Reinhardt (Django's son), Martial Solal, Sacha Distel, Jimmy Gourley and the Orchestre National de Jazz.
The film also includes contributions from Leo Vauchant, Arthur Briggs, Tommy Benford, Bill Dillard, John Hammond, Charles Delaunay, Stephane Grappelli, Henri Renaud, Jimmy Gourley, Johnny Griffin, Pierre Michelot, Alain Vian, Francis Paudras and Moustache.
