In a small village in Bengal a would-be writer and his wife struggle to raise their children Durga and Apu. An added burden is an aged relative, 'Auntie'. In the unchanging, centuries-old world of rural India the children grow up.
Ray's debut film, "Pather Panchali", is more than the saga of a poor Bengali family's fight to survive. It transcends nationality to tell a universal story, rich in incident and humour and deeply moving.
