Part two of a wildlife exploration of the Holy Land. There is a great wilderness in Israel, where the Judaean desert plunges hundreds of metres below the level of the Mediterranean and meets the shoreline of the Dead Sea.
In this cauldron of heat and sulphur smells, no fish swim in the bitter and imprisoned waters. But where springs bring sweet water from the rocks of the Judaean mountains, life flourishes.
At Ein Gedi oasis desert birds find shade and food. The high cliffs are the realm of the sure-footed ibex. Below, in the rocky wadis, live foxes, hyenas and the hyrax - a rabbit-sized relative of the elephant!
