A recording session in search of the Bolden sound.

Humphrey Lyttelton and a hand-picked group of musicians made a record last summer in which they tried to reproduce the sound of the Buddy Bolden band. Bolden has been called the first jazz man but his band, which was active at the turn of the century in New Orleans, was never recorded.

Film cameras followed the rehearsal and the recording session in a small studio in south-east London as Humphrey Lyttelton coaxed his men to forget their own ways of playing and adopt the Bolden style.
