Natural disasters-earthquakes, hurricanes, famine - are hitting our planet on an unprecedented scale. Television brings fresh images of distress, death and misery into our living-rooms. Faced with forces apparently too great to handle, many of us suffer a feeling of hopelessness.
But it need not be like that.
Richard Kershaw reports on the new developments in the management of disasters; on how Bangladesh has, for six months, been successfully fighting off a famine that threatens six million people; how Latin America copes with earthquakes; and he investigates the horrendous lessons to be learned from the African famine.

Belgian Grand Prix
A quarter way through the season the World
Championship is in top gear. As the teams return to the Circuit de Spa-
Francorchamps after a two-year absence ELIO DE ANGELIS in his Lotus is just two points ahead of McLaren's ALAIN
PROST and Ferrari's MICHELE ALBORETO. The Italian driver in his scarlet car won the Belgian Grand Prix at Zolder last year and nearly beat
Prost to the line at Monaco two weeks ago. After three second places this year
Alboreto now looks set to record his first victory of the season.
