Think of Switzerland and you think of mountains, cuckoo clocks, chocolate, cheese and banking - not exactly the sort of topics Jonathan King is used to covering in his reports from America. But Switzerland is every bit as fascinating, as he found out to his surprise while covering the Golden Rose Festival in Montreux.
He visits a finishing school, where girls become ladies; reports on the aftermath of the Swiss youth revolution, and explains just what all those bits are for on a Swiss army knife. Plus more unusual television clips from around the world, interviews with top stars, including
David Frost and new films and videos.

So You Want to be a Conductor In the second of two films, Leonard Bernstein , Sergei Koussevitzky 's most distinguished pupil, discusses the importance of Tanglewood in developing the talents of so many young conductors. 'I was in that first
Koussevitzky class of 1940 and then, in turn, I took Seiji Ozawa as my assistant. So there is a line, a continuity, not just through me and Seiji, but through a great number of conductors who made their mark at Tanglewood.'
Claudio Abbado ,
Michael Tilson Thomas , Zubin Mehta and Lorin Maazel are just a few of today's international figures whose careers took wing after studying at Tanglewood.
But such is the competition to gain a place - conducting students and instrumentalists are selected each year in a nine-month, world-wide screening process - that there are also some notable exceptions.
'Whatever qualities you look for in a young conductor, I for one clearly did not have them at the time I applied,' says
Andre Previn. 'And the same goes for Simon Rattle. Simon and I share the distinction of being two who didn't make it here!'
So what then are these necessary talents and how does a young conductor develop the immense degree of musicianship and technical control he needs to possess? This film examines in detail the craft of conducting demonstrated in Tanglewood masterclasses under the guidance of experienced international conductors of the stature of Seiji Ozawa , Kurt Masur and Leonard Slatkin
