Gurkha
'Run they would not and of death they seemed to have no fear', wrote a survivor of Britain's encounter with the Gurkhas in 1814. It was a bloody affair, an unlikely beginning to a long friendship. Ever since, these hill-farmers from the terraced mountainsides of Nepal have been serving in the British Army: legendary soldiers with their curved knives, the kukri, and adopted bagpipes and tartan.
This film follows the remarkable trail of events that takes a shepherd boy from the shadow of Mount Everest to service in a foreign army in the western world. His life will be linked with Britain from the day he enters the Gurkha camp as a hopeful recruit to the day he returns as an old soldier, one of Her Majesty's Himalayan pensioners, back to the hill village he left so many years before.

Gardeners' World celebrates its 600th edition with a visit to the magnificent Crarae Gardens. Designed and planted around a glen, whose burn tumbles into Loch Fyne , the garden features a wealth of rare and beautiful shrubs and trees set in the spectacular Scottish highlands. But maintaining such a garden is no easy task, and many of the day-to-day problems are faced by the owners of even the smallest of them. Head gardener Jim MacKirdy is on hand to offer practical and sometimes unusual advice.
