Once it was a lake. Now it is just a hot, dry pan of clay, ' the Place of Dry Water'. Yet this treeless ground is teeming with some of the most beautiful and bestial wildlife in Africa.

A series of six lectures by Professor Colin Blakemore
We have five senses to rule our lives and inform us of everything we need to know about the world around us. But our sensory systems tell us about only a tiny fraction of all the forms of energy and chemical events. Other animals have sensory experiences of ultraviolet, infra-red, polarised radiation, ultrasound and even electricity and magnetism.

In February this year the BBC attempted to provide the first live pictures of a winter ice climb. For seven days a film crew recorded the efforts of technicians, climbers and Royal Marines, as they struggled in 100mph winds and sub-zero temperatures. Arctic tents were smashed, helicopters iced up in mid-air; five visiting climbers were killed. The project was called off hours from success, but one man went on, French Alpinist Jean Franck Charlet.
