Even ten years ago the diagnosis of cancer or leukaemia in a child usually amounted to a death sentence. Today there is much more hope. A specialist unit at the Bristol Children's Hospital is getting successful results in well over half the cases that come to them. Scientific advances have been magnificent in the last decade, but the unit staff has also established an important new approach to treatment which includes explanation, support and encouragement for the parents as well as the child.
