In 1760 Joseph MacDonald wrote of piobaireachd - the ancient classical music of the great Highland bagpipe - ' ... the war-like compositions ... have a glorious effect when advancing on the enemy'. No longer confined to remote Highland glens, piobaireachd has reached the sun-soaked hills of California and even Japan. Performed in an intensely competitive situation by an ever-increasing number of top exponents from as far afield as Australia, New Zealand and Canada, this film tells the story of the pursuit of the glorious effect.

Even ten years ago the diagnosis of cancer or leukaemia in a child usually amounted to a death sentence. Today there is much more hope. A specialist unit at the Bristol Children's Hospital is getting successful results in well over half the cases that come to them. Scientific advances have been magnificent in the last decade, but the unit staff has also established an important new approach to treatment which includes explanation, support and encouragement for the parents as well as the child. The first - and the most successful-adaptation of a Le Carré novel to the big screen. Burton plays Leamas, a top British Intelligence agent, forced into a plot to discredit the KGB. The seedy world of spying is magnificently portrayed by a fine British cast, including Rupert Davies as the first personification of the now famous Smiley.
