Adolf Loos must be one of the few architects to relate modem architecture to men's fashions. He based the design of the Knize men's shop in Vienna, like the clothes in it, on the image of the restrained but progressive and prosperous Englishman. For Loos, craftsmanship and reticence in ornament were to be the hall-marks of modern architecture as of Savile Row suits. The development of Loos' style from a sophisticated version of the English Arts and Crafts Movement to his own version of the International Style is shown in shops and houses built in Vienna from 1910-1930.

Land Beyond the Mountains (1924) In 1924 the migration of the Bakhtiari tribe across Persia was accompanied, and filmed, by three Americans: the first ' foreigners' to have made the great trek with the herds to the summer pastures. This film follows the tribes across the rocky uplands and witnesses the fording of rivers by hundreds of people and thousands of animals -described by one American as 'the greatest piece of continuous action we had ever seen'. At the last mountain barrier the barefoot tribesmen have to dig a path through great snow-drifts, before descending into the pastures-the promised land.

Back-door Beeching
It is now 20 years since Dr Beeching dramatically cut back Britain's national railway network amid a chorus of public opposition.
Today, hundreds of miles of branch lines are quietly being scheduled for closure. This time it is the engineers, not the politicians, who will wield the axe, and the reason is concern about safety. Because investment has not kept pace with maintenance, many of these lines are literally crumbling away and will have to be taken out of service.
Tony Wilkinson reports on the list of likely casualties and examines why the closures could happen without any opportunity for public protest.
