The last of three programmes
In the Second World War the flying boats of RAF Coastal Command played a crucial part in the war at sea and it was the Sunder-land that played the leading role. Squadrons of Sunderlands flew in all theatres of war, guarding shipping lifelines and seeking out enemy fleets and U-boats. In peace-time they became part of the BOAC fleet of aircraft on the reopened Empire routes, but their civilian role was short-lived. Bigger airports and longer run-ways meant bigger and faster land planes. The last flying boat built, in 1952, was the Princess, the largest aircraft at the time; she lived for only one year.

Written and presented by Patrick Nuttgens

When Lutyens died in 1944, he was described as the greatest architect since Wren. His output was prodigious; major work on houses, banks and offices, Great War cemeteries in France, the Cenotaph in Whitehall, the vast crypt of a never-to-be-built RC cathedral in Liverpool, and in 1931 the capital of India, New Delhi.
Patrick Nuttgens, an architect and director of Leeds Polytechnic, looks at Lutyens' life and work, his letters, his drawings and bubbling sense of fun, and discusses why his reputation, once pushed aside by the march of the Modern Movement, is at the centre of revived interest today.

(An Arts Council exhibition on the work o/ Lutyens is at the Hayward Gallery, London, until 31 January)
