Chris Bonnington introduces the 1980 Expedition Film Competition for The Mick Burke Award from the Royal Geographical Society, London
In this, the first of two special programmes, we canoe 12,000 miles through the wilderness of North West Canada; join the Akha hill tribes of Northern Thailand to examine their threatened culture; explore the remote cliffs of Iceland with their vast seabird colonies.
These expedition films, together with those to be shown next week, were all made by amateur film-makers competing for the award given by the BBC Natural History Unit and the Royal Geographical Society. It is their work that the judging panel will assess to choose the winners of a competition designed to encourage the many expeditions that set out from the United Kingdom each year, to make a film of their adventures.

India always changes people, and I have been no exception.
The novelist Ruth Prawer Jhabvala is scriptwriter for a team that have been making feature films together for nearly 20 years - Merchant-Ivory Productions. Evacuated from Nazi Germany as a child, of Polish-Jewish parents, she was educated in England. Marriage took her to India, which has provided the setting for many of her stories and novels. She writes as an insider, although her background has made her a permanent exile.
Tonight's interview looks at the way Ruth Prawer Jhabvala has portrayed the Indians and the English in her screenplays - her sympathetic observation of the tragi-comedy of clashing civilisations.

Set in ninth-century Germany, this fascinating film examines the theory that there was once a woman on the throne of St Peter - later known as ' Pope Joan '. The story traces the extraordinary life of a young girl who, after her father's death, is raped by his companions. Fleeing to a nearby convent she becomes their librarian, the result of her literacy and intelligence. Once again fleeing from barbarians and rape, she adopts a boy's clothes and is later to become ' Brother John'. The rest is a strange version of history set in an undocumented bygone age.
