Sir Georg Solti conducts Richard Strauss's operatic comedy

The third in Performance programme featuring Sir Georg Solti is a filmed studio performance of the Von Hofmannsthal/Strauss comedy which is second in popularity only to Der Rosenliavalier. Set in Vienna at Carnival time 1860, it is the story of the consuming love of Zdenka - younger daughter of an impoverished family - for an army officer, Matteo. He in turn loves Zdenka's older sister Arabella, a love which is totally rejected. Arabella loves a mysterious stranger...
With all the delightful humour of Von Hofmannsthal and the sumptuous writing of Strauss, it is an evening for laughter and for tears - a true comedy.
