Destination Doha 1: The Easy Bit?
Late on a wintry Tuesday night, four men in three massive 40-ton lorries leave England on a 5,000-mile journey through 11 countries. Their destination, Doha. The cargo, a bizarre mixture of goods for this capital of the newly-rich oil Emirate of Qatar.
The adventures of the men on their four-week drive through Europe, Asia Minor, the Middle East and across the deserts of Arabia are told this week and next. Tonight's programme sees the convoy to Istanbul, through snow, breakdowns, police hold-ups and other complications. But it wasn't only the lorries that had problems. The run through Europe was meant to be the easy bit: it didn't quite work out that way. Narrator BENNY GREEN
