Rex Allerton is a Hollywood film star whose fame is second only to that of Fang the Wonder Dog. Everywhere he goes he is mobbed by girls, but in a life quite devoid of privacy, his only close friend is his servant Jennings. One day, he angrily suggests that the studio might as well raffle him as a publicity stunt-a joke that he will later bitterly regret.

'Why should you put limits on us because we're mentally handicapped? We do not accept such limits, and in our programme we hope to turn your ideas about us upside-down. We think that we may have found " a way back " for those of us who do not measure up to those standards. Don't just watch this programme; we want you to contribute ideas, not on how you can help us, but on how we can help you.
(We're even offering a prizes .)'

In Einstein's centenary year, BBCtv honours the memory of an extraordinary man in the way he would have wished: by explaining his extraordinary ideas. In our era of laser beams, atomic clocks, spaceflight and black holes, the principles of relativity can at last be made clear and vivid.
Peter Ustinov speaks Einstein's words and imagines he is a relativistic time-traveller. He also appears as himself, the layman, setting out to understand the bizarre concepts of relativity. Seven distinguished British and American scientists are his tutors. The setting is Texas, where motorcycles can apparently travel close to the speed of light, changing shape and colour as they illustrate the relativity of motion. Here, at the McDonald Observatory - our window on Einstein's Universe - experts philosophise about ideas beyond Einstein's.
